Playing Online Backgammon
Backgammon is a very old table game. It is so old, that in fact there are debates regarding to its origin. But it really doesn’t matter who invented this game today, because millions are playing it, and its popularity is growing each day.
With the advent of internet and technology playing online backgammon became a possible activity and there are thousands who are playing this game all over the world.
How to start playing backgammon online? Well, the first step is to learn what actually backgammon is. This is a table game, played by two. This board game has very simple rules, so it is very easy to learn. First, you have to know that it is played on a board which has 12 colored triangles, called points on each side. The colors are usually one darker and one lighter, but the colors are different from table to table. The game is played by small figures, called checkers and their color is corresponding to the colors of the points. During the game the players throw two dices and move the checkers according to the numbers shown on these, once at a time. When the games start, all the checkers are set up on the table in a determined order. Both the players have the same setup. The checkers are numbered in the form of a horseshoe, from 1 to 24. The starting setup is the following: there are two checkers on the 24 point, five checkers on his 14 point, three checkers on his 8 point, and five checkers on his 6 point. The other player has his checkers set up exactly the same in a mirror like view, where his 24 point is the other players 1 point. When beginning both players throw the dice, and the one with the bigger value will start.
The goal of the game is to bring all the checkers on his side of the board, on the 1 to 6 points. After that they will remove the checkers, and the first one who removed all of them is the winner. The movements and the removal of the checkers, when they are gambling are done according to the outcome of the dice. There are two dices, both showing a certain number. The player has to move two dices, as far as the number tells him to. It is possible to use the same dice twice in order to move. If the other player has two or more checkers on the point where his dice would arrive, than the move is not possible, the player has to choose another move. If there is only one checker on the point, and it is the opponents, than that lone piece is called a blot.
The blot can be hit. If it is hit, than it has to be removed from the board and replaced on the board on the 24-19 points, depending what number will be shown to him. If the point is occupied by the players’ checkers than he can place the checker moved on his own. If there is no possible move, than the opponent will throw, and the player has to wait for its turn. If the player throws a double, for example both dices are showing 4, than the moves are doubled, meaning that he will move as it was upper mentioned, but he will repeat his move once again.
When all checkers are collected on the 1 to 6 points, the player can start to remove them. This means, that he will throw the dice, as he did along the game. The difference is that according to the numbers shown on the dice he will remove a checker from the respective point. For example if the dices show a 1 and 5 than he will remove a checker from the point carrying the number 1 and one from the point carrying the number 5. There might be a situation when there is no checker on the number. The first one is when there is no number on a low number checker. In this case the player is forced to move a checker from a higher numbered point to a lower numbered point, if possible. If not than it is the other players turn. For example one dice is showing 3, and he doesn’t have any checkers on that point. Then he has to move a checker from a higher point to a lower point, moving three points. It is possible that the player has to do it two times. There is another situation when the player throws two high numbers. If he doesn’t have on that checkers on that high points, only below that point, than he removes the checkers from the closes, lower point to the numbers thrown. The first player who removes all the checkers will win the game.
Usually the game consists in three rounds. The winner is who wins two out of three. There is another situation in backgammon strategy, when a player removed all of his or her checkers and the other player removed none. In this case, the player who removed all is declared automatically the winner. This game is a very interesting one, because there is a very big doze of luck and talent also too. Many think that this game is controlled only by luck, because it is determined of the outcome of the dices. This isn’t true. There are lots of tactics and strategies, and a good player won’t loose the game just because he doesn’t throw the numbers he wanted. If he makes good decisions, regarding to the moves he will win, no matter what is his luck in the game. Good luck in the game.
