Backgammon Doubling Cube: the Basics
The moment that you start to play Backgammon, online or in land based games, you will realize how important and vital the doubling cube is. Because a lot of players do not take the time to study it, knowledge of the double will give you an edge and win a lot of matches.
Of course there are numerous concepts that you have to consider in Backgammon, but some decisions concerning doubling are fairly easy to make. For instance, if this dice roll will determine the outcome of the game (or even the match), and you are leading (in the sense that your checkers are closer to the bearing off points) then double.
If the game is on the line but your opponent has the cube, you have to consider other factors. If he offers, then there are three scenarios: you drop, you accept and lose at double the stakes, or you win double. Here you need to remember the way you have played, and also the score. If you accept the offer and lose, how much will you fall behind, or how much of your lead will you lose?
Another thing that most new Backgammon players do not seem to realize is that there is no obligation on their part to use the doubling cube. If they are playing well, and have control of the cube, they can play "cubeless" until the end.
If the opportunity to double does not present itself, do not force it; doing so will not only double the stakes, but if your opponent wins, he will gain double points, momentum and control of the double.
A lot of players make the opposite error: they use the cube very early in the game. Not only do they lose control of the double early, but the lead they may have gained would have been wiped out as the game wore on.
Others offer the cube the moment they grab the lead, hoping to increase it. It is much better to offer the Backgammon double when you have a substantial lead, so in case you do not win, you will still be ahead.
Always keep in mind gammons and backgammons. If they are in effect, you should be extra careful about offering the doubling cube as this can raise the stakes exponentially. Often players get caught up in the game they forget about it, and end up losing a lot of points.
The best way to learn about the doubling cube is to use it. You either download a game, or play it with your friends. Try different strategies, and you will be able to increase your knowledge of Backgammon.
